Remove What Hinders Your Walk with Jesus

Hebrews 12:1

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

RevRayWhat hinders you from your goals – from your desired result?  If you wish to lose weight – someone preparing your favorite fattening dish might be a hindrance.  If you’re training for a marathon a twisted ankle might hinder you from achieving your goal.  Does it seem to rain every time you wash your car?  What is it that hinders you from your goals or desired results?

Have we thought of this in regards to our spiritual life?  Our goal may be to increase our devotional time – spending more time reading the Bible or praying.  Our goal might be to lead a Sunday School class or even begin attending one.  We might even feel that this is what God has called us to do.  What might hinder this effort – this goal?  A busier schedule?  A favorite sports team with a winning streak going?  Family activities?  A new hobby? What Hinders Our Walk with Jesus?

Luke 18:22

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

I remember – as a child – we had a Shasta camper – and on the back of it we had State stickers.  Each time we were traveling with the camper and we were close to another State (one we hadn’t been in yet) dad would go out of our way to cross that State line and get a picture of the State sign with us standing near it.  Then we could put that State sticker on the back of the Shasta!  At times we went quite the bit out of our way!  It was a goal he had – to get as many State stickers as possible and he was willing to do whatever it took!

We have a number of candidates for Youth Director and some of the candidates are going out of their way to present themselves in the best light – because their goal is to get hired.  Have you ever been in a similar place – trying to get hired and doing whatever it takes – Biblically – legally and morally of course?

I would imagine that most of us would do whatever it takes to accomplish a life goal – spending more than we should – going out of our way – going days without sleep – putting up with undesirable circumstances – and more.  Today’s passage is part of the story of a certain ruler – a powerful – wealthy person – came to Jesus.

Luke 18:18-23 – 18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good — except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.'” 21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said. 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth.

What is it that stands in our way of following Jesus? Our jobs?  Our bank accounts?  Our hobbies?  Our families?  Our lifestyle?  What have we placed in front of Jesus in our lives?  If it came down to giving something up in order to follow Jesus – what would we have a hard time giving up?  Some are so caught up in their own lives that giving God first place in their lives would be hard.  Some find it hard to tithe – expecting God to take leftovers.  Some find it hard to set aside time to do devotions daily – thinking God will understand.  Some have a hard time coming to worship on time or on a regular basis – after all God knows our heart – right (yes God does and that is the problem).  And these are small things.  What is it that hinders our walk with Jesus?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
