Learning to Hold Our Tongues

Proverbs 10:19

Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.

As we begin a new administration – we are faced with a question about learning to hold our tongue. For four years plus – those who opposed the last President were relentless in their attacks – verbally – on social media – and in other forms of the media. They called names and started hash tags like #NotMyPresident. They were relentless and hateful. How will the other side behave during the next four years? I’m praying that most will be less hateful and vindictive.

Are there folks in your life that talk too much? Are you one of those people? Some people hid their insecurities by talking – all the time (or typing all the time). Some people – and we all know someone like this – seem to be an expert (not) on every subject and will run their mouth showing their ignorance (like Cliff Clavin on the TV series Cheers). We all know people who speak before they think.

Proverbs says that sin is not overcome – ended – by multiplying words. It says that the prudent or wise thing – at times – is to hold our tongues. Holding our tongues can be hard for sure. Have you ever tried it – literally or figuratively? Some will be tested during the next four years of the current administration. Some may feel supported in their attacks because of actions taken in the next four years – but please – let’s learn to hold our tongue (keystroke).

Our Temper Causes Damage

James 1:19-20

19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

RevRayThe first three definitions on www.dictionary.com for temper read this way – (1) a particular state of mind or feelings – (2) habit of mind, especially with respect to irritability or patience, outbursts of anger, or the like; disposition: an even temper – (3) heat of mind or passion, shown in outbursts of anger, resentment, etc.

Do you or someone you know have a temper? Anger – expressed by our temper – can cause severe damage to relationships.  It can destroy a marriage.  It can damage children raised in a home with a parent or parents with tempers.

I found this telling short story example on the internet without an author credited.  If anyone knows who wrote it – please let me know so I may credit them. Continue reading
