Who Is The Battle Against?

Ephesians 6:12

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

When I was in High School – we battled several area High Schools for dominance in sports and in academics. We had battles with their bands and music departments too. Annapolis High was one of the best at most sports and in music. We battled Severna Park and Arundel High for 1st place in many areas of school life. The battles were real and we played or performed for keeps.

Who do we battle today? Do we battle folks at work? Do we battle against folks who root for another sports team than us? Do we battle with our spouse? Do we battle with members of our own church? Do we battle with our pastor? Who do we battle? And why? Continue reading

Are We Comfortable In Our Faith Walk?

Matthew 10:32

Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.

What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? Have we ever taken the time to figure out what a disciple of Jesus Christ looks like? If we have – have we tried to be that person? Would we say that being a disciple is something that would be easy or hard – comfortable or a stretch?

How does being a disciple of Jesus Christ play out in our lives? Do we know what God desires of us? Do we seek His face and desire His grace? Are we in a comfortable place – as a disciple – or are we struggling with the place God placed us? Are we being stretched as a disciple or are we comfortable? Is God calling us to places that will require our faith to work or do we find ourselves in places where we can rest and be comfortable? Continue reading

Can We Remember When We Were Young?

1 Timothy 4:12

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

Can we remember when we were young? I had a dream the other night of when my wife and I first met – back when we were dating. Sunday – we sang a song that we sang in the Soul Searchers back in the day. I’m pretty nostalgic so the memory brought nice feelings.

Can we remember when we were young? As we age – memories from our younger days can bring back good or not so good memories. If we had a good childhood or young adult years – our memories might be good. I remember being in great shape when I was younger. I officiated sports year round and all of that activity kept me in good if not great shape. If I could return to the 1970’s – that would be one thing I would tell myself – to keep officiating sports or at least to remain active. That activity burned lots of calories. I even had a chance to be a profession baseball umpire. Continue reading

Looking Like Jesus

1 John 4:12

No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

Some people have said – over the years – that I look like my father. I was named after him too – and God called me into the same field of work. We have so many similarities. Both of us are/were workaholics – working several part-time jobs over the years in addition to our full-time ministry. When people see me – they often see my father. We look so much like one another. I always take it has high praise to be compared to my late father.

In today’s passage we’re told that if we love one another – God lives in us and people will see God in us. 1 John 4:12 – No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. Continue reading

Think Before We Speak

Psalm 141:3

Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.

I remember one time playing basketball – and missing every shot – or so it seemed. I mentioned that someone must have put a lid on the rim. Of course no one had – but the idea of a lid on the rim – keeping the ball from going thru the basket is something that a number of players has claimed when they go cold shooting.

Have you ever heard the phrase – put your brain in gear before putting your mouth in motion? Too many of us shoot from the hip so to speak. Too many of us speak before we think – and then wish we could capture our words and take them back. Has that ever happened to you? I know it has happened to me – far more times than I wish to remember. Continue reading
