Evangelism – Our Next Sermon Series

Acts 5:42

Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgSunday we begin a new sermon series titled simply – Evangelism – at First UMC in Laurel. The first sermon is titled Zeal.   I believe that one must has zeal in order to evangelize.

I remember once – a pastor that encountered this experience. He was called an Evangelical by someone – but did not know what this person meant by that name.

Here is a definition I found. The National Association of Evangelicals defines an evangelical as someone:

  • who believes that the Bible is authoritative
  • who has had a born-again experience
  • who shares this message of faith.

To evangelize means you explain your beliefs to others with the view that they might want to adopt your beliefs. An evangelist is someone who preaches the Gospel to try to get people saved and on their way to Heaven. The English words come from Greek words that mean to announce good newsbring a good message, or preach the Gospel.

Sunday we’ll look at the need for us to have zeal to evangelize. In order to get others to desire what we have – to know the One we know – we need to be passionate about our faith. The other sermons in the series are titled – The Rise and Fall of Adam and Eve – From Death to Life – The Heart of the Gospel – The Practice of Evangelism Part I & II. There may be additional sermons in this series as I will miss two Sundays in October.

The disciples never stopped sharing the Good News.  They devoted their lives to telling others about Jesus.  Acts 5:42 – Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

What are your thoughts? Throughout the sermon series I would be interested in your thoughts. If you cannot attend our services – you can listen to our sermons here. If that link doesn’t work – try this one – http://fumcl.org/sermons/.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

  1. There is a difference between zeal and being obnoxious, amen? Glad to see you sharing on evangelism, but I’m biased.

    • I hear you – but zeal is not hard sell – but rather enthusiasm for our faith – a real passion for building relationships and letting our light shine for Jesus.
